BISMARCK (NewsDakota.com) – They had been so close all year to knocking off one of the WDA’s top teams and they finally pulled it off. The Jamestown High boys basketball team is going to the West Region semis following a 70-67 win over third-seeded Mandan.
The Braves lead 2-0 and that was the first and only time they lead. John Horgan hit the first of his five threes and the Jays never trailed again. They built their lead to as big as 15 in the first half, but Mandan answered to pull within five at the break.
Jared Kallenbach lead the offense and the defense finishing with 18 points and not allowing Mandan point guard Trey Wiest to get going and he scored well below the 16 he had the last time they met.
Jamestown stormed out of the gates in the second half with a 13-5 run and again withstood a big push from the Braves, who tied it three times and even had a free throw attempt to take the lead in the final minutes.
With 18 seconds to go and the score tied, Jamestown took a timeout to set up the play that would be the winner. Kallenbach hit Skunberg with John Horgan coming to set a screen, but Skunberg didn’t need it and pulled up and canned a 20-footer.
Wiest couldn’t get a clean look to tie at the buzzer and the Jays rushed the floor with their biggest win since they beat Dickinson in 2015 to go to state.
The Jays will play St. Mary’s, who also pulled an upset, in the West Region semifinals at 7:15pm tomorrow night. The Saints wiggled passed Bismarck High for their second 2/7 upset in as many years.
