JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Twenty-five days after escaping Forest City, Iowa, with a 63-61 win over Waldorf, the seventh-ranked Jimmie women’s basketball team left no doubt as to how they finished the North Star Athletic Association regular season with a 16-0 record and the top seed in the conference tournament.
Jamestown parlayed a 16-0 first quarter run into a 28-4 lead after the first ten minutes, never looking back in a 100-39 win over the Warriors in NSAA quarterfinal action Wednesday night at Harold Newman Arena.
UJ, now 28-3 on the season, advances to the semifinals against 4th-seeded Mayville State (N.D.) Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The other semifinal matchup sees No. 2 Valley City State (N.D.) go up against third-seeded Bellevue (Neb.) at 6:00 p.m. Both games will be played at Harold Newman Arena.
The Jimmies led by 36 with 4:17 before halftime after a Mackenzie Sparby (FR/Watford City) basket made it 46-10. UJ’s biggest first-half lead of 38 points came with 58 seconds in the half on a bucket by Emma Stoehr (FR/Woodbury, MN).
Waldorf struggled to get any offense going in the first half, making only 7 of 30 shots from the floor, and turned the ball over 17 times. Jamestown finished the first half 22 of 39 from the floor, relying exclusively on their inside game in the second quarter by not attempting a single three-pointer.
Entering the fourth quarter, Jamestown led 72-32 and opened with an 11-0 run to lead by 51. Mercedes Baumgartner (FR/Bismarck, ND) drained a three-pointer with 2:15 left to make it a 60-point game, and Courtney Mosloski (SO/Fairmont, MN) scored with 29 seconds remaining to allow UJ to hit the century mark for the fourth time this season.
McKayla Orr (SR/Ypsilanti, ND), one of five Jimmies in double figures, led the way with 14 points. Reserves Sparby (12), Mosloski (10), and Baumgartner (10) were also in double digits, as was Paige Emmel(SR/Bismarck, ND) who finished with 10. Jenna Doyle (JR/Princeton, MN) had seven rebounds while Orr recorded four steals. Marina Nowak (JR/Rogers, MN) chipped in with 9 points and six rebounds.
The Warriors, who finish the season at 6-21, got 9 points from Michaela Graffunder. Angie Gore had 8 points and Morgan Straight finished with 6 points and 5 rebounds. Waldorf turned the ball over 27 times, which turned into 34 UJ points.
The Jimmies had a 46-35 rebounding advantage to go along with 15 steals. The bench accounted for 65 of the team’s 100 points, as eight reserves scored four or more in the game.
