MINOT, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Senior Goaltender Matthew Schneider was named West Region Senior Athlete of The Year by the WDA Hockey coaches. and head coach Matt Stockert was named Coach of the Year by his piers. The announcements came Saturday following the Championship Game of the West Region Hockey Tournament in Minot Saturday night.

Schneider led the Blue Jays back to the State tournament following a 4-2 win over Bottineau/Rugby in the State Qualifying game on Saturday.

Schneider heads into the state tournament with 13 wins, 3.21 gaa and a 91.5 save percentage.

Schneider led the West Region in wins, games played for a goaltender and his 91.5 save percentage was third in the region among goalies who saw at least 100 shots. The 798 shots he faced this year is first in the west and third in the state behind Reegan Reule of Devils Lake who saw 843 shots and Gabe Pederson of West Fargo who faced 879 shots this season.

Stockert is in his 14th season as the head coach of his alma mater. He has 126 wins as a head coach and has guided the Jays to three state tournaments. The 13 wins this year are the most since they won 13 games in the 2012-2013 season, the last time they went to the state tournament.

Schneider and the rest of the Jays will travel to Grand Forks Thursday to face Fargo Davies in the quarterfinals of the State High School Hockey Tournament.
