JAMESTOWN, N.D. (JimmieAthletics.com) – The sixth-ranked Jimmie women’s basketball team continued its unbeaten run in North Star Athletic Association conference play, holding the No. 25 Mayville State University Comets to two second-quarter points on the way to a 95-54 victory Saturday afternoon at Harold Newman Arena.

After allowing the Comets 17 points in the first quarter, the Jimmie defense turned up the intensity in the second ten minutes.

UJ ( 24-3 overall, 13-0 NSAA) held Mayville State without a field goal on 11 attempts, and the only points the Comets scored came on a pair of Kylee Heurung free throws with 24 seconds remaining in the half. A 15-0 second quarter Jimmie run turned an eight-point first quarter lead into a 23-point cushion.

Andi Gayner connected on Mayville’s last field goal at the 2:33 mark of the first, and it was not until Naomi Torgerson’s three-pointer at 8:52 of the third that Comets made a shot, a span of 13 mintues and 41 seconds. By then, the Jimmies had a 45-24 lead and showed no signs of relenting.

A thirty-point third quarter by the Jimmies was bolstered by a 13-of-20 performance from the field, and taking into account the four shots UJ missed from three, Jamestown was 10 of 13 on two-point attempts. Jamestown shot 52.3 percent for the game while holding Mayville State to 31 percent.

McKayla Orr (SR/Ypsilanti, ND) was one of five Jimmies in double figures, leading Jamestown with 15 points. Bryn Woodside (SR/Albert Lea, MN) had 14 points and 6 assists, while Jory Mullen (JR/Pierre, SD) finished with 12. Paige Emmel (SR/Bismarck, ND) had 10, as did Courtney Mosloski (SO/Fairmont, MN). Jenna Doyle (JR/Princeton, MN) chipped in with 9 points and 4 assists. Marina Nowak (JR/Rogers, MN) pulled down a team-high five rebounds.

The Comets (16-7, 7-5 NSAA) were led by Andi Gayner’s 16 points. Naomi Torgerson was also in double figures with 15. Joelle Ertl grabbed five rebounds and recorded a game-high four steals.

Rebounds were 36-30 in favor of Jamestown, and the Jimmies turned the ball over eight times compared to the Comets’ 25. UJ scored 28 points off turnovers, and had a 35-14 edge in bench scoring.

Both teams are at home next Friday as the Jimmies host Bellevue (Neb.) while the Comets welcom Dakota State (S.D.)
