FOREST CITY, IA (JimmieAthletics.com) – A night after making less than 36 percent of their three-point attempts in a loss at Viterbo (Wis.), the Jimmie men’s basketball team connected on 48 percent of their long-range shots in an 85-61 win against Waldorf University Saturday evening.
In all, Jamestown was good on 12 of their 25 attempts, led by Sam Johnson (SR/Mora, Minn.)’s 5-for-7 and Christian Kvilvang(JR/Cando, N.D.)’s 4-for-6 performances. Kevin Oberweiser(JR/Drummond, Mont.) sank two from beyond the arc, and Jake Reuther (SO/Jamestown, N.D.) another. It was the 12th time this season the Jimmies (16-7 overall, 6-5 North Star Athletic Association) have made 12 or more threes in a game, improving their record in those contests to 11-1.
UJ scored the first nine points of the game and Waldorf did not get on the board until 3:23 into the game. The Jimmies’ biggest lead of the half was 16 points, 28-12, at the 8:15 mark of the half. Jamestown led by nine entering the second half.
Johnson gave Jamestown an 18-point cushion after a three-ball made it 55-37 with 12:27 remaining. Waldorf went on a 6-0 run to get within 12, but the Jimmies responded with a 14-0 run of its own to make it a 26-point game with less than 6:30 to play.
Johnson had 19 points to lead UJ, and now has made 190 three-point field goals in his career to put him in a tie for third place with Mark Hoge (2010-14). Leighton Sampson (SR/Worthington, Minn.) finished with 15 points and 7 rebounds, and Jon Purintun (JR/Linton, N.D.) chipped in with 14 points and 8 assists. Kvilvang was also in double figures with 13, the fourth time he’s scored 13 or more in his seven starts.
Kaden Verdin led all scorers with 21 points and added 11 rebounds for Waldorf (10-12, 5-5 NSAA). Brady Kuchinka added 16 and 4 assists.
Overall, Jamestown shot 52.7 percent from the floor while holding the Warriors to 38.1 percent. Rebounds were 38-34 in favor of the Jimmies, as were turnovers (11-13).
UJ steps out of conference play Tuesday to host Trinity Bible College, then is on the road at Dickinson State (N.D.) on Thursday.
