N.D. (JimmieAthletics.com) – Trailing 65-57 entering the fourth quarter, the 12th-ranked Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) University Tigers erupted for 29 points while holding the Jimmies to just 10, on the way to an 86-75 win Wednesday evening at Harold Newman Arena.
The loss ended a 16-game winning streak for No. 6 Jamestown (20-3), who lost 87-69 to the Tigers on Halloween. DWU improved to 19-4 overall.
UJ held a slim four-point lead after the first quarter but extended that advantage to ten, 46-36, at the break. The Jimmies shot 17 of 32 in the first half while DWU was 13 of 37.
The Tigers cut into the Jimmie lead in the third quarter, but the home team took an eight-point lead into the final ten minutes.
Sarah Carr converted a three-play at the 4:30 mark to tie the game at 68. Madison Mathews connected on a three-pointer during the Tigers’ next possession, giving DWU a 71-68 lead with 3:56 left.
Kynedi Cheesman and Riley Osthus combined to make 11 of 11 foul shots in the final 55 seconds to seal the win. DWU was 16-of-17 in the quarter and 30-of-31 for the game.
Cheeseman led all scorers with 27 points. Amber Bray finished with 13 and Sarah Carr came off the bench to score 13 and haul in eight rebounds. Ashley Bray was also in double figures with 12, and Osthus ended with 10.
Paige Emmel (SR/Bismarck, ND) had 19 points to lead the Jimmies. Marina Nowak (JR/Rogers, MN) had 12 points and five rebounds off the bench, while Bryn Woodside (SR/Albert Lea, MN) (11 points, seven assists), and McKayla Orr (SR/Ypsilanti, ND) (11 points, five rebounds) also hit for double figures.
Rebounds were 36-31 in favor of Dakota Wesleyan. Both teams turned the ball over 12 times, but Jamestown had a 19-7 advantage in points off turnovers. The Tiger bench scored 34 points to the Jimmies’ 23.
Next up for Jamestown is a weekend road trip to Viterbo (Wis.) and Waldorf (Iowa) on Friday and Saturday.
