MADISON, S.D. (VCSU) – Four Vikings scored in double figures Saturday but it wasn’t quite enough as Dakota State separated late for an 82-78 win over the VCSU men’s basketball team.
Valley City State held a slim 70-69 lead with five minutes remaining, but Dakota State outscored VCSU 13-8 down the stretch – including its last 10 points on free throws.
The Vikings drop to 7-12 overall and 1-6 in the North Star Athletic Association. Dakota State improves to 8-10 overall and 3-3 in the NSAA.
Four Vikings scored in double figures, led by 21 points and 4 assists from Jayden Ferguson. Rashad Satahoo went 5-for-5 on 3’s and poured in 19 points for the Vikings. Alex Quist hit four 3’s and scored 12 points, and Austin Dunbar had 12 points and five rebounds. Justyn Galloway scored six points and pulled down 11 rebounds.
The Vikings blistered the nets from 3-point range, going 12-for-16 from deep. VCSU finished at 51 percent from the field (26-51) and 74 percent on free throws (14-19). VCSU had a 32-25 advantage in rebounds, including a 10-7 edge on the offensive glass. VCSU committed 14 turnovers compared to just six turnovers by the Trojans.
Justin Folkers led Dakota State with a game-high 28 points. Keeon Johnson added 16 points, and Kevin Daniels had nine points and 12 assists. Dakota State shot 49 percent from the field (28-57), 44 percent on 3’s (11-25) and 83 percent at the line (15-18).
VCSU led by as many as five points early in the second half. Dakota State built its biggest lead of eight points in the first half.
