(NewsDakota.com) Opening day of the 2018 Stutsman County Boys Basketball Tourney seen three games decided by 16 points or more and the fourth and final game feature a come from behind buzzer beater. But no upsets, as both number one and both number two seeds will advance to the semifinal round on Friday night. Here are the first day results:
Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter 71 Midkota 55
The first game of the day saw four lead changes and five ties early in the contest but the Imperials would pull away in the second half and improve to 3-4 overall with the win. NGS was led by Junior Jamison Fettig with 19, William Kleppe added 17, Pacey Feist 15 and Ethan Kleppe 10. In the fourth quarter, Fettig scored his 1,000th point of his career and also ended the game with six steals and six rebounds. For Midkota, Senior Mason Smith had 16 points, the Mustangs drop to 1-3.
Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier 55 South Border 38
The Mustangs committed 23 turnovers and shot only 31% from the field as the Rebels beat the Mustangs to advance to the first semifinal on Friday night. EKM was led by Senior Lane Hanson with 18 points and 12 rebounds, Junior Isaac Huber added 14 points and nine steals. For SB, Senior Alex Ruff had 12 points to lead the way. The Mustangs drop to 1-4, EKM improves to 4-1.
RV Carrington 83 Medina/Pingree/Buchanan 38
The Cardinals led by as many as 50 points in the second half and improved to 4-2 overall with the victory over the Thunder in the third game of the day. Carrington shot 64% from the field, leading the way was Senior Garrett Bickett with 23 points and six rebounds. Senior Kolton Vetter added 14 points. For the Thunder, Braxton Heinle had 14 points. MPB drops to 1-4 overall.
Kidder County 53 Ellendale 52
Ellendale led 52-51 With 5.9 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Kidder County would get the rebound after a missed free throw from Ellendale, drive the length of the court and get the ball into the hands of Junior Gage Pfaff, who would score a 12 foot jump shot at the buzzer for the victory. It was the second buzzer beater of the night, Ellendale’s Lucas Hofer hit a half-line shot at the end of the first quarter. The Cardinals led 30-16 at halftime, but the Wolves would outscore the Cardinals 19-6 in the third quarter to come within one point. The fourth quarter featured three lead changes as well. Leading the way for the Wolves was Austin Schmidt with 23 points including three 3-pointers and Pfaff added 21 points including four 3-pointers. For Ellendale, Austin Molan had 18 points, Hunter Thorpe had 15 and Lucas Hofer had a double-double, 14 points and 10 rebounds. Ellendale drops to 3-2, KC improves to 4-3.
