CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The city of Valley City is concerned about readings that indicated sulfate levels are past state health department guidelines near the intake of the water treatment plant in the Sheyenne River.

City Administrator David Schelkoph said the cost of treating water with higher sulfate levels is time consuming and expense.

The agreement with the state health department calls for sulfate readings to be maintained below 750 parts per million below Bald Hill Dam year round.

The higher sulfate readings are the result of Devils Lake water coming out of the east end outlet were officials say higher sulfate exist compared to the west end outlet.
