The girls of Oakes had a double-digit lead in the first quarter, but saw Ellendale claw back several times, including tying the game once, and being within one possession several times in the second half. In spite of all the chances the Cardinals (3-4, 0-2 Class B District 5) had, they were never able to have the lead once in the contest.
Oakes (4-1, 1-0) was lead by Nicole Schmitz with 19 points, while Sadie Hansen added another 17. Ellendale had a team high 14 points from Alyssa Nishek.

What the Cardinal girls were unable to do, Ellendale’s boys did, and as a result won the Cowbell yet again. Oakes (1-1, 0-1) was up 10 after the first and six at intermission, before Ellendale (2-0, 1-0) outscored the Tornadoes 20-14 in the third, and Cole Goehring’s bucket with a little more than two seconds left ensured the Cowbell would return back to Ellendale.
The Cardinals had three players in double figures, lead by Austin Molan with 19 points. Lucas Hofer had 15 and Hunter Thorpe with 12. Oakes’ Garrett Meehl had 20 in the loss.
Ellendale returns to action on Thursday, December 21 when they head to Napoleon to meet Napoleon-Gackle/Streeter. Oakes is back on the hardwood Monday, December 18 when they welcome Wyndmere/Lidgerwood. Coverage on KDDR-AM 1220/95.9 FM and NewsDakota.com starts around 7:15 p.m. with tip around 7:30.
