CITY, N.D. (VCSUVikings.com)- The Mayville State Comets started off hot leading early by over ten points, and never trailed as they defeated the Valley City State men’s basketball team 74-65.

The Valley City State Vikings tried to battle back cutting their deficit to two points, 33-31, at half time. The second half was well fought on both sides but the Vikings were unable to overcome 17 turnovers and poor shooting.

Mayville state improves to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in the NSAA.  Valley City State drops to 4-8 overall and 0-2 in the North Star Athletic Association.

The Vikings leading scorer on the day was Jayden Ferguson who scored 19 points. Austin Dunbar added 11 of his own. Valley City shot 40 percent from the field going 24-59 overall, including 3-13 from behind the arch and 14-17 from the free throw line.

The Comets had three players scoring in double figures Friday with Gorg Alhag scoring 21 points and Daniel Lindgren and Eric Staebler adding 17 and 12 points, respectively. The Comets had a strong performance from behind the three-point arch in the second half going 4-6 from deep over the final 20 minutes.

The Vikings will hope to rebound Saturday when they face Waldorf University at 1 p.m. at the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse.
