JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Horse riding therapy. Something that doesn’t seem very common to those who have never heard of it.
Now a group of area individuals are trying to bring it to Jamestown.
“A Moment of Freedom” is a non-profit organization located in Buchanan, North Dakota. They’re currently trying to establish the riding program for those with special needs. Founder/President Annie Keffeler says similar programs are popping up in North Dakota.
The SPURS program in Aberdeen, South Dakota has been helpful for the newly formed Jamestown program. Currently, the group is trying to raise around $4,000 to construct an outdoor arena for the program.
Program Director Kelli Connolly has lived her life surrounded by horses and has felt drawn to “A Moment of Freedom” since day one. She is currently undertaking several classes and trainings in order to be fully certified.
Once the arena is built and the training is complete, “A Moment of Freedom” is looking at an official summer of 2019 opening for their program. Keffeler says they will be working with the Anne Carlsen Center to bring the therapeutic service to the children there. Connolly says there are multiple ways a horse provides therapy; from feeding them, to grooming them and of course, riding them.
The group is looking for volunteers and monetary donations to reach their goal of building the arena.
