N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Southeast District is requesting that the Stutsman County Sheriff’s Department provide security during master calendar hours in court, or every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
Stutsman County Sheriff Chad Kaiser reported to the Stutsman County Commission that the department would provide the service by request before. It’s now being requested that the department staff the courtroom in Stutsman County during the master calendar hours.
Kaiser pointed out that he doesn’t have enough staff during the day to do that full time, meaning the county would need to hire more officers. Sheriff Kaiser says due to budget reasons, the department would need to piecemeal the schedule together until they could possibly hire on.
Kaiser says they’ll probably use reserves for the time being along with other staff. Kaiser told the commission that Judge Daniel Narum informed him that he has never had a courtroom that wasn’t fully staff by security.
Kaiser says he supports the request. If something were to happen in court, it would fall on him and the Stutsman County Commission.
The commission will await a letter from Judges Daniel D. Narum, Cherie L. Clark, and Troy LeFevre before taking action.
