WALES, FLA.(VCSUVikings.com) – Five Vikings scored in double figures Friday and the VCSU women’s basketball team opened its Florida trip with an 87-71 victory over Johnson & Wales (Fla.).
Valley City State led by as many as 30 points in the fourth quarter – 80-50 – before securing the 16-point victory at the Warner Classic. Leading 39-30 at the half, VCSU outscored the Wildcats 34-18 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
The Vikings improve to 2-0 on the season. Johnson & Wales drops to 2-1. VCSU wraps its Florida trip Saturday against host school Warner University. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m. central time.
Mackenzie Huber scored 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds for the Vikings on Friday. Lexi Lennon had 15 points, five rebounds and five assists. Alli Vandal added 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Kennedy Henningsgard posted 11 points and four assists, and Kate Williams knocked down two 3’s as part of her 10 points. Annie Swenson and Hannah Schlecht each had eight points, while Schlecht dished out a team-high six assists. The Vikings recorded 24 assists on 36 made baskets.
VCSU shot 56 percent overall (36-64), 54 percent on 3’s (7-13) and 73 percent on free throws. Johnson & Wales shot 38 percent from the field (24-63), 30 percent on 3’s (8-27) and 68 percent at the line (15-22).
The Vikings held a monster advantage on the glass, out-rebounding the Wildcats 43-18 overall and 14-7 in offensive boards.
