N.D. (NewsDakota.com)—-The Carrington Cardinals scored first against the top ranked Burros of Hillsboro-CV (HCV) on a 3 play 70 yard drive with 6:37 to go in the first quarter. Quarterback Hayden Schmitz threw a perfect 34 yard over the shoulder pass to Jayden Shipman on the Cards first possession of the night to give the visitors a quick 7-0 lead. Unfortunately for the Cards it would be the only score of the night as the Burros would clamp down defensively and hold the Cards to 142 total yards of offense (only 72 yards after the opening drive). Schmitz would leave the contest in the second quarter with an injury and finished 3-4 passing for 74 yards and 1 interception and the TD pass. Drew Page led the Cards with 54 rushing yards on 12 carries. Trey Rosenau had 2 receptions for 40 yards and Shipman led the Cards with 44 receiving yards on a pair of catches.
HCV would rack up 319 total yards, 297 coming on the ground. Grant Skager ran the ball 38 times for 244 yards and 4 touchdowns. Skager’s first score was from 46 yards with 11:29 to go in the 2nd quarter, cutting the Carrington lead to 7-6. With 7:47 to go in the half, Skager gave the Burros the lead for good with a 23 yard TD run and a 12-7 advantage. Neither team would score in the 3rd quarter, but Skager would score early in the 4th quarter on a 4 yard run giving the Burros a 20-7 lead after a successful Skager 2 point conversion run. Skager capped off his 4 TD night with a 25 yard tackle breaking run down the right sideline and a 27-7 victory. The Burros starting quarterback Ryan Troftgruben completed just 1 of 6 passes for 22 yards in the game. Carson Henningsgard had the lone reception for the Burros.
Carrington finishes the season with an 8-2 overall record and HCV will take a perfect 10-0 record into next Saturday’s state semifinal game versus Dickinson Trinity.
