N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Watford City’s lone touchdown, on the final play of the first half, held up and they escaped with a 6-3 win over Jamestown in the Class AA football quarterfinals.
Jamestown took the opening kick-off down for points when Connor Fuchs knocked down a 31-yard field goal following a nearly six minute drive. The teams traded punts and turnovers until the final drive of the half.
The Jays appeared to have Watford City pinned back on a great punt by Jared Kallenbach, but Wolves returned Nate Skarda muffed the punt and it rolled into the endzone for a touchback. A few plays later, Hunter Schwartzenberger hooked up with his big tight end Jadyn Ewing on a pass play that took the ball inside the Jays 25.
With the game clock set to expire, Schwartenberger threw a heave to the end zone that was caught by Elijah Brown to score the games only touchdown.
Jamestown struggled to get anything going on offense until the last drive of the game. They started to move the ball after being backed up to their own five yard line. A Tommy Falk pass to Aaron Bredeson converted a long third down.
The Jays marched it inside the Wolves 30, before a personal foul penalty moved them back near midfield. Falk hooked up with Marcus Hochhalter for 21-yards to set up a fourth and manageable, but the pass was intercepted. The Wolves were able to run out the clock.
Jamestown finishes the season at 6-4. Watford City will play Shanley in the semifinals next weekend in Fargo.
