N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Last year in North Dakota, one unbelted vehicle occupant died in a motor vehicle crash every four days.

Not wearing a seat belt continues to be the number one contributing factor of motor vehicle fatalities in North Dakota. In an effort to save lives, law enforcement across the state will have extra patrols from November 1 through December 15 for the Click It or Ticket (CIOT) campaign enforcing the seat belt law.

“Wearing a seat belt is the single most important thing anyone in a motor vehicle can do to protect themselves in case of a crash,” said Stutsman County Sheriff Chad Kaiser. “Lives are saved every year when people buckle up, and we hope this Click It or Ticket enforcement campaign helps North Dakotans understand the need to buckle up every trip, every time.”

While this Click It or Ticket enforcement campaign runs from November 1 through December 15, motorists should know that officers are out enforcing seat belt laws year-round.

This effort is funded through federal grants administered by the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT). Learn more about traffic safety initiatives through the NDDOT, visit dot.nd.gov, ndcodefortheroad.org or join the conversation on the Code for the Road Facebook or Twitter pages.

Families are also invited to create memorials in honor for those who have died in crashes in North Dakota using the virtual Crash Memorial Wall at ndcodefortheroad.org/memorial.
