VALLEY CITY, N.D. (VCSUVikings.com) – Jayden Ferguson and Rashad Satahoo combined for 52 points Sunday afternoon as the Viking men’s basketball team knocked the rust off with an 82-69 season-opening victory against Brandon University.

Ferguson and Satahoo picked up right where they left off last season by pouring in 29 and 23 points, respectively. Justyn Galloway had a big game as well, posting a double-double with 14 points and a career-high 21 rebounds.

The Vikings trailed just once in the game, 2-0, and led by as many as 19 points early in the second half. Valley City State shot just 39 percent overall (27-69), but did go 42 percent from 3-point range (8-19). The Vikings shot 53 percent in the first half (17-32) to build a 46-34 lead at the break. VCSU was limited to 27 percent shooting in the second half (10-37), but Brandon University got no closer than seven points down the stretch.

Junior center Jouvon Edison had six points, four rebounds and three assists in his Viking debut. Alex Quist, Logan Nelson and Chase Carpenter all hit a 3-pointer and finished with three points each.

VCSU recorded assists on 13 of its 27 baskets, getting four assists from Rashad Satahoo and three each by Edison and Quist.

Valley City State held a 48-39 edge on the glass, including a 15-11 advantage in offensive rebounds. Of Galloway’s 21 rebounds, nine came on the offensive end. The Vikings went 20-for-27 on free throws, including 13-for-16 in the second half.

Brandon University was led by 24 points from Jonathan Range. Girece Kasumba added 11 points and John Paul scored 10. The Bobcats shot 37 percent overall (26-70), 27 percent on 3’s (9-34) and 53 percent at the free throw line (8-15).
