(JimmieAthletics.com) – Paige Emmel scored 14 points, shooting 4-of-8 from three-point range, and was one of five players in double figures as the Jimmie women’s basketball team opened the 2017-18 season in their first game in Harold Newman Arena with an 84-60 win over the University of Manitoba Friday evening.
Bryn Woodside added 13 points and five assists, Jory Mullen scored 11, making all five of her free throw attempts, and Allison Jablonsky chipped in with 11 points and four steals. Marina Nowak was the fifth UJ player with 10 or more points, finishing with 10 points and seven rebounds. Mackenzie Sparby led the Jimmies with eight rebounds
The Jimmie men’s basketball team started the 2017-18 season on the right foot, winning their first game in Harold Newman Arena Friday night, 103-85 over Brandon University.
Leighton Sampson recorded a double-double in his first game as a Jimmie, scoring 26 points and grabbing a career-high 12 rebounds. Sampson’s 26 points were the most since he scored 33 against Nebraska Wesleyan on January 10, 2015 during his freshman season at Dordt (Iowa.)
All five UJ starters hit for double figures, including Sam Johnson , who connected on six of his eight three-point tries to finish with 18 points. Johnson’s six treys were just two off of his career-high (8) set on December 30, 2015 at Morningside (Iowa). Kevin Oberweiser finished with 16 points, tied a personal best with seven rebounds, set a single-game high with six assists, and was three-of-four from beyond the arc. Ben Weisbeck and Jon Purintun chipped in with 10 points each, with Weisbeck adding four rebounds and Purintun three assists.
