CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City Police Department would like to warn everybody about a scam after two people lost several thousands of dollars.

Lt. Dana Rustebakke said two Valley City residents told police they had been scammed. He said the most recent report was on September 28 from a woman who was victimized for $7,000. The victim said she received a call stating they were police officers and had arrested a family member of the victim. She was told she could send bond money so their family member would be released. The victim was then contacted again stating a judge ordered a fine and requested more money. It was at this time the victim thought things were not right and contact law enforcement. Rustebakke said this is the second report received by police within the last 2 weeks in Valley City. He said in the second case the male victim would not tell police how much money he lost in the scam.

The Valley City Police Department would like to remind everybody that no law enforcement agency would ever call a family member requesting money to bail someone out of jail. Also, no agency would call and ask you to send cash via UPS, FedEx, or USPS.

Rustebakke said there are people out there that will do whatever they can to take advantage of other people. He said please be weary of any strange calls you may receive from unknown numbers. If you receive a call, with a request like this, hang up and call the Police Department or the Sheriff’s Office.
