VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- On a chilly day that required a lot of squeegeeing by the coaches and the VCPS maintenance director, Valley City played Fargo South and had their annual hot dog feed put on by the Valley City tennis Association. Coach’s Comments

Not often does North Dakota tennis have Division I caliber tennis players.  So, when we have one, it is fun to watch.  Davis Lawley from Fargo South has a few colleges on his short list which includes Creighton University.  He is the #1 player in the state by far, and he proved it again today.

Looking at our culture, we have improved dramatically in the last few years.  We have excellent sportsmanship, mutual respect, and great attitudes.  Watching Fargo South warm up and then play, we need to add something to our culture that they already have – competition.  Their drive in warm-ups and in the matches was the best we’ve seen this year.  They showed up today to play and win no matter the opponent.  We need that same drive and belief if we are going to take the next step.

Playing such a good opponent shows us where we can improve upon.  Fargo South got the ball back in doubles because we didn’t hit aggressive when we had a volley sitter.  Also, we play shots instead of playing points.  Once we hit a shot – we are slow to recover and then we aren’t ready for the next shot.  These are two things that we can improve on to get better before the play-in match next Monday.

With how much we have improved this year, we still can keep improving!  Lets have a great practice tomorrow and match on Thursday against Grand Forks Central!
