N.D. (NewsDakota.com)——The Carrington Cardinal’s scored 4 first quarter touchdowns and jumped out to a 24-0 lead over the visiting Rugby Panthers after 1 quarter of play. Hayden Schmitz connected with Jayden Shipman on the third play of the game on a 34 yard TD pass :51 seconds into the contest. Schmitz finished the game completing 5 of 10 passes for 82 yards and 2 TD’S. Schmitz also found Trey Rosenau in the right corner of the end zone for a 15 yard TD with just :15 left in the opening quarter.
Kaden Wolsky led the Cardinal’s ground game with 129 yards on just 9 carries and 3 TD’S. Wolsky had 1 carry in the second half for 13 yards. Drew Page also cleared the century mark with 119 yards rushing on just 8 carries. The Cards finished the game with 285 rushing yard on 36 attempts (7.9 yards per carry). Payton Smith added an 18 yard TD run in the second quarter and Lucas Geiszler picked up 32 yards on 4 carries including a 1 yard TD run in the third quarter giving the Cards a 48-0 lead. Seth Nelson threw a 10 yard TD pass to Kolton Vetter in the third quarter. Vetter had 2 catches in the game overall and 7 different Cardinal’s caught a pass in the game. Shipman’s 34 yard TD reception was the longest catch of the night.
The Panthers were held to 123 total yards of offense in the game. Kaden Jaeger ran the ball 15 times for 86 yards and the Panther’s only score from 11 yards with 4:28 to play in the game. Quarterback Kevin Vetsch completed 3 passes for 52 yards and also found Devan Michels on a successful 2 point conversion pass. The Panthers converted the only 2 point try of the night as Carrington failed on all 8 of their attempts. The Panthers dropped to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in class A Region 2 play. Carrington improved to 5-0 overalland 4-0 in class A Region 2 play. The Cards will travel to Langdon next Friday night (September 29th) in a battle of 2 undefeated teams and ranked 4th (Langdon) and 5th (Carrington) in the state.
