OMAHA, NE (VCSUVikings.com)- The Valley City State volleyball team opened its three-match road trip with a sweep Thursday night, taking down Grace University (Neb.) in straight sets.

The Vikings won a close set one, 25-22, and then rolled to 25-20 and 25-8 victories to complete the sweep. VCSU improves its record to 6-6 overall this season. The Vikings complete their road trip with matches Friday night at Bellevue University and Saturday afternoon at Dakota State University.

Freshman Paige Benson led a balanced Viking attack with nine kills on Thursday at Grace University. Six different Vikings had at least four kills in the match, including eight by Megan Johnson and seven by freshman McKinley Putnam.

VCSU hit .313 as a team, compared to just .187 by Grace University. The Vikings hit a scintillating .542 in the third set, posted 14 kills and just one error as they completed the sweep.

Rowan Garcia had 18 assists and Leah Ruter posted 17 assists for VCSU. Polette Medina served up four aces and Taylor Sharp had three in the win. Hailie Wilds led the defense with eight digs.
