Coach’s Comments

This was an awesome match for our boys team.  Individual and collectively, we played at a very high level.  We lost by two points in a third set tiebreaker and also lost a third set by three games.  If those two matches swing our way, we would have won the dual.  We improved a lot from Tuesday’s match against Red River.

Riley and Liam dropped the first set in doubles, but settled in and handily won the match. They are playing the good shot from the baseline and putting balls away at the net.  The biggest improvement was their consistency on defensive balls.  In singles, Riley took the net over when the opportunity came about and put points away.  Liam racquet prepped and moved very well leading to consistent strokes and great placement of his shots setting up the point.

Collin played the best match of his career in singles today.  His movement, racquet prep, shot selection, consistency, mental game, and everything was better in his singles match today than ever before.  He also had the most fun he has ever had on the court.  It was very fun to watch him play at that level!  Great job Collin.

Jack got the short end of the stick in both singles and doubles today.  The way the WFS line-up worked out, Jack got to play the #1 and #2 singles players from Sheyenne in the doubles and then turned around and played an All-State player from 2016 in his singles.  His consistency is improving and he is trying to take balls away at the net.  An improvement that we will work on in practice is hitting the ball further away from his body – this should lead to greater control, power, and consistency.

Zach had to wait for 2.5 hours for #3 doubles to finish before he could start his singles. Zach’s opponent was a little unfocussed after playing that extremely long match.  Zach took advantage and realized that all he had to do was play smart, consistent tennis and he would win the match.  Zach kept the ball in play, looked for times to attack, and sailed through the match in under an hour while only dropping one game.  Great job of recognizing what you need to do and then executing that plan Zach!

Bennett played his first varsity doubles match on Tuesday and his first varsity singles match today.  His brother, Austin, did the opposite by playing varsity singles on Tuesday and his first varsity doubles match today.

Austin and Blake had the 2.5 hour doubles match with two tie-breakers.  After winning a close first set, Blake and Austin came back from down 1-4 to get it to 4-5 before dropping the set.  In the third set, they got down again before storming back by just playing tennis and not worrying about the score.  This time, they forced a third set tiebreaker.  In the breaker, nerves played a factor and we dropped the match 5-7 in the tiebreaker.  This match had both Blake and Austin poaching at the net, hitting solid groundstrokes, and attempting to get every ball back.  I couldn’t be prouder of these two and the whole team.

On the JV side, Seth, Kai, Max, Trey, Ethan, and Gavin all won their first matches as Hi-Liners!  Congratulations – hopefully the first of many!  Hustling to each ball leads to success for our JV along with excellent teamwork.  All the JV is working hard and improving where today was better than Tuesday and Tuesday better than the prior week’s practice.  Keep hitting the pillars of Hi-Liner tennis!
