Coach’s Comments

Today, several family members and parents commented that this was a fun match to watch.  I agreed that it was very fun to watch as we played competitive points and our players hit the three pillars of sportsmanship, 100% effort, and positive attitude throughout the day.  Great job, team.

Riley Miller moved up one spot in singles from last year while Liam Williams went from #5 to #2 and not playing much doubles to #1 doubles.  In their doubles match, Liam was taking in every point and learning right on the court.  As his doubles experience is limited, we did make some errors – but the positive was that on change overs, they were able to identify those errors and then try to fix them on the next change over.  Great reflection and improvement on the court fellas!

Collin White and Jack Ingstad played number two doubles today.  Jack did not play any varsity doubles last year and proved that he is an asset in doubles.  Jack took the net over, poached, and was always looking to put the ball away.  He did make several errors – but that is how you learn!  I told him on change overs to keep going for the ball and those shots will soon start going in for winners as he gains experience with them.  Way to be aggressive throughout the entire match, Jack.

Collin took a bit to settle in with his doubles and singles.  Collin is a big hitter and is good at hitting big when his feet are set and his racket is prepped.  He took too many big swings without being prepped and balanced that led to errors.  In singles, he did start to split step, unit turn and hit neutral balls and setting up points before going big.  Collin will get this and it will click very soon when to play the neutral ball and when to go aggressive.  We believe in you Collin!

Bennett Rogelstad and Blake Triebold had the match of the day at #3 doubles.  They were aggressive at the net.  They played the smart cross court shot.  They went between their opponents.  They never gave up on points.  And – it was both of their first ever varsity match!  The way they played, you would have thought that these two were veterans on the court.  In the second set, they went up 3-0 which amped them up a little too much which led to unforced errors that did them in.  I will always take a doubles team that is amped too much as we can pull in the reins a little bit if needed.  Great first varsity match guys!

Austin Rogelstad and Zach Baumgartner played #5 and #6 singles respectively today. Austin started slow and didn’t split step or move into the ball.  He picked it up and started playing the ball and split stepping and prepping better, but his opponent proved to be too much.  Zach was more coachable on the court today than I have ever seen.  He put into action what he was coached to do on change overs.  He split stepped and racket prepped well.  When coming to the net, he had good footwork and kept his racket infront and still.  Good work Austin and Zach!

As a team, we have many things to work on.  The issues that are team-wide and will be worked on tomorrow are footwork/racquet prep along with having purpose for each shot. This match was a good gauge to see where we stand – we will work hard as we have hopes of making some noise come regionals.

JV Thoughts:

A young Hi-Liner JV squad had a tough opponent to start the season but didn’t let a much older and bigger Red River intimidate them. The entire Hi-Liner JV squad worked hard and made the Red River players work for every point. One of the surprises this season is 8th grader Seth Zeltinger who teamed with 7th grader Kai Kringlie and together they looked like a a much older doubles team hitting some great serves and working together to put volleys away. Another hi-light was the 7th grade team of Max Magnuson and Casey Kruger who have improved with every practice and played some great point against the veteran Red River opponent. This Hi-Liner JV team is young but exciting to watch!
