ANTONIO, TX (NewsDakota.com) – Thousands are being rescued following the category 4 hurricane that struck the south of the United States.
Hurricane Harvey has brought on over 50 inches of rain in less than two days, causing unprecedented flooding in Texas. Reports say hospitals are running out of food, offshore oil platforms have been shutdown, individuals have been left homeless.
The American Red Cross Association has continued assistance, with 19 individuals coming from the Dakotas Region. Gretchen Hjelmstad reports that they will be hosting volunteer training classes and hope to send down more in the coming weeks.
“We send down volunteers two weeks at a time,” Hjelmstad explained. “We want to be able to send more down and bring back the other volunteers.”
Red Cross has enough shelter supplies in Texas now to support 28,000 people with supplies being send for an addition 22,000.
“Nearly half of our emergency response fleet, 150 vehicles, have been mobilized. We are working closely with the entire response community, government agencies, other non-profit groups, area businesses and others.”
Hjemlstad says individuals can help in different ways. They include:
– Visiting redcross.org
– Calling 1-800-Red Cross (1-800-733-2767)
– Texting “Harvey” to 90999. This will be an automatic donation of $10.
