Leonard Barron, 94, died early Saturday morning, August 26, 2017 at JRMC in Jamestown, ND.

George was born November 26, 1922 in Flandreau, SD to Leonard and Marguerite (Flannery) Barron. He grew up in Flandreau, graduating high school in 1940. After high school he was involved with the CCC and later joined the Navy being called up to active duty in 1943, after which he was a pilot flying PBY’s and Beachcraft. In the summer of 1946 he moved to Jamestown to become a flight instructor at Smith’s Flying Air Service; his future wife was one of his students, after herself serving in the Philippines as an Army RN.

He married Jewel Berner on November 27, 1946 in Jamestown, ND at the Basilica of St. James. They made their home in Jamestown, raising three children along with numerous golden retrievers and cats. He graduated from Jamestown College, and received his Master’s in Chem-Physics from UND. He taught chem, aviation, physics and drivers ed. He retired from teaching in 1986 and continued to reside in Jamestown.

George enjoyed fox, bird and game hunting. He loved dogs, photography, camping, masonry, baking pies and construction; he built his own house with his in-laws. He also had a passion for genealogy.

He is survived by 3 children, Mary (Arnie) Kuhn, Jamestown, ND, Julie (David) Arneson, Jamestown, ND, and Michael (Lee) Barron, Skanee, MI; 4 grandchildren, Jessie Arneson, Pullman, WA, Corey Arneson, Fargo, ND, Laura Barron, Laurel, MT, and Jeff (Monique) Barron, Ranchester, WY; 6 great-grandchildren, Desire, Jason, Michael, Kolbe, Christlynn, and Kaitelyn; niece, Myra Quanrud; sister in-law, Alice Swanson; and 3 special friends, Daphne Drewello, Gary Scherbenske, and Barb Caine.

He was preceded in death by his parents; mothers and fathers-in-law; brother, Marion; and grandson, Jason.

Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
