CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Barnes County Sheriff’s office is interested in using the former National Guard site at the airport for maintenance of their vehicles and an impound lot in the future. But there are a few steps remaining before final approval.
Barnes County Municipal Airport Authority manager Mike Lerud said pending board and Federal Aviation Administration approval the site could be turned over soon to the county.
He said the airport board authority would like to have the county pay the annual property taxes estimated at $6,000 under a future agreement. Lerud said the airport authority board meets Tuesday to discuss the idea. He said FAA approval of the plan is also pending.
Meanwhile, Barnes County Commissioner Cindy Schwehr asked Sheriff Randy McClaflin whether he thought it would be a good idea to discuss building a new jail at the site northwest of Valley City.
Ten years ago a proposal to build a new jail crumbled after there wasn’t enough monetary funding to support a multi-county correctional facility.
The following is a portion of the audio from the August 1st meeting during a Barnes County Commission meeting.
