N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Team Jerry’s Kids retained its first-place title this year in Jamestown Regional Medical Center’s GOLF “fore” GOOD tournament.

The team’s name, “Jerry’s Kids,” is in memory of the late Jerry Baenen. Baenen had played in each GOLF “fore” GOOD tournament since the event’s origin seven years ago.

After his death in December 2016, JRMC organized this summer’s GOLF “fore” GOOD in Baenen’s memory. The tournament benefits the upcoming JRMC Cancer Center.

Baenen is remembered as a loveable golfer who was generous with both his time and money. A cancer survivor, Baenen knew that cancer is not an illness you fight alone. To help, Baenen volunteered his time with Stutsman County Relay for Life. He’d also drive people to their oncology treatments in Bismarck, if they needed it.

Team Jerry’s Kids consisted of Baenen, who was in his 80s, Orr, age 54, as well as Orr’s stepson, Brent Giesler, and friend, Michael Nogosek, who are both in their 20s.This year, Baenen’s daughter, Julie Jeske, played in his honor. She also took top prize for the Jerry Baenen Longest Putt Contest. Jerry’s Kids took first place in the contest with a score of 48. Team Layered – Cody Champagne, Lucas Morken, Brian Meyer and Cody Lausch – took second with a score of 49.

“I will always remember my dad saying ‘Drive for show, putt for dough,’” Jeske said.

Thirty-four teams competed in this year’s tournament, raising more than $28,000.

“GOLF “fore” GOOD is a great excuse to support a great cause,” said Lisa Jackson, JRMC Foundation director. “Miles matter when it comes to cancer care.”

Each year, the JRMC Cancer Center will provide chemotherapy infusions for more than 100 residents of Jamestown and the surrounding communities. Currently, those people travel more than 100 miles for that care. This will eliminate more than 160,000 miles of travel per year.

Baenen knew that those miles matter, Jeske said.

“Cancer is a battle you don’t fight by yourself,” she said. “It pretty much takes a village to help you through it.”

The JRMC Cancer Center will include six infusion rooms, a consultation area and space for nurses and staff. Last year’s GOLF “fore” GOOD netted more than $26,000.

So far, JRMC Foundation has raised more than $900,000 of its $1.5 million goal.
