Soulis, 99, Jamestown, ND, died Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at his home in Jamestown.
Michael was born July 13, 1918 at Watertown, SD, the son of John Soulis and Alice (Kimberly) Soulis. He moved to Jamestown when he was eight years old. He was educated in the Jamestown School System and lived in the city for 91 years.
Mike was known to his friends and family as “Greek”. He worked 36 years for the Northern Pacific-Burlington-Amtrak Railroad System. He served in the US Army in France during WWII, in the 244th Engineer Battalion Company C and was a 51-year member of the American Legion. His father, Pappy, owned the Majestic Bowling Lanes in Jamestown and the family was well known in bowling circles both locally and nationally. Mike was inducted into the Jamestown Bowling Hall of Fame in 1992. He was a great outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. He had a remarkable knowledge of the central flyway and established many lasting friendships with farmers along the way who were always willing to share their land with him. He was a longtime member of the NRA. He made several fishing trips to Canada with his buddies in search of “the big one” and he was always willing to bait the hook for his grandchildren. In 1990 he was recognized by the ND Game and Fish for catching an award winning Walleye, 9lbs, 10oz., at the Jamestown Reservoir and thus became a member of the ND Whopper Club. He enjoyed singing and has a repertoire of hundreds of songs and he created clever ditties at will. He enjoyed reading, TV westerns and game shows and was always ready for a game of solitaire.
He is survived by sons, Michael (Margaret) Soulis, Pokomoke City, MD and Joseph (Rhonda) Soulis, Bloomington, IN; 6 stepchildren, 17 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wives, Mary Ann Christ to whom he was married for 55 years, and Josephine Carlascio; brothers, Jake, Chris and Nick; a sister, Jeanie and 2 stepdaughters, Cathay Schlecht and Bonnie Church.
The family acknowledges special appreciation to those who allowed him to live independently and in sound mind every day of his life; his stepdaughter, Sherry, niece Joanne Soulis and longtime friend, James Derhiem; his hospice nurses, Trish, Amber 1, Amber 2 and assistant Stacey; each one of them brought great joy to the last months of his life.
Inurnment – 1:00 PM Thursday, August 3, 2017 at the ND Veterans Cemetery at Mandan, ND where he will join in final rest with his wife, Mary Ann
