N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown Safe Shelter has been providing assistance for victims of violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking since 1980.

In that time, they have remained committed to empowering victims of physical, emotional, and sexual violence by offering information to allow them to choose their own courses of action.

Lynne Tally is the Executive Director for Safe Shelter. When she was approached about building a short-term emergency housing unit for those in need, she says she was a little hesitant at first.

Tally says she was approached by Mary Newman, who loved the idea of a communal living space. She then became the lead donor of the project.

Now, fundraising efforts continue as they look to build this new living space in Jamestown.

Tally reports that they are about 3/4ths of the way in raising funds for the project. Roughly $300,000 to $400,000 still need to be raised for Mary’s Place to become a reality.

Board member Mary Lou Urquhart is also a co-chair for the planned Barn Dance on August 5th.

The band Old Friends was immediately on board for the event, which is planned at Boondocks south of Jamestown from 6 PM to Midnight. Tickets are limited and cost $50 each, which includes transportation, food and more. They can be purchased from any SAFE Shelter member, Newman Signs, and Bank Forward. All proceeds will go on to the Mary’s Place Project.

A bus will leave for the event starting at 5:30 PM and will return every 90 minutes to bring individuals back and to the event in it’s duration. Boondocks Barn is located at 7560 46th Street Southeast Jamestown.
