N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Jamestown and Stutsman County Residents are confused following Governor Doug Burgum’s statewide fire and drought emergency proclamation.
Stutsman County Emergency Manager Jerry Bergquist says he was inundated with phone calls from citizens Tuesday with concerns about the proclamation, the current Stutsman County ordinance and the sales and detonation of fireworks for Independence Day.
“The city of Jamestown and Stutsman County have two different ordinances regarding fireworks,” Bergquist stated. “The city of Jamestown doesn’t allow the sale and detonation of fireworks until July 1st.”
Fireworks can still be sold outside of city limits.
Bergquist says that the newly approved ordinance for Stutsman County will prohibit controlled burns in times of High, Very High and Extreme fire conditions as well as Red Flag Warnings year round.
“What we didn’t include in the ordinance is fireworks. Those can be detonated at anytime in those conditions,” Bergquist reported.
Jamestown Fire Chief Jim Reuther reports that residents need to be mindful if they’re going to be detonating fireworks this year. He says that goes for both the county and the city.
Currently, an inspector is making rounds of stands in Jamestown to make sure they are suitable for sales of fireworks. Reuther says they encourage people to celebrate, just to be mindful about their surroundings and the dry conditions when setting off fireworks.
Fireworks went on sale in the state Wednesday, but will not be available to purchase or detonate within the city limits of Jamestown. Times that fireworks can be detonated and sold in Jamestown are July 1st through the 3rd from Noon to 11 PM and July 4th from noon to 1 AM July 5th.
“No person shall offer any fireworks for sale unless such person is a resident of the city or living within the one-mile area under the city zoning control,” the city ordinance states.
The public Jamestown fireworks display will be held Tuesday night July 4th at the Stutsman County Fairgrounds.
