N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Soybeans are number one for the first time in the history of North Dakota spring planting.

NDSU Extension Educator Randy Grueneich said farmers traditionally plant more acres of spring wheat, even before statehood, but that changed in 2016. He said prices for three major commodities soybeans, spring wheat and corn planted in North Dakota dropped significantly last year, but fantastic yields helped bring up the bottom line.

Grueneich talked about these and other interesting trends in North Dakota agricultural history with reporter Steve Urness during his Voice of the Valley program in Valley City on May 23rd.

He said spring planting is behind last years pace but should be finished well ahead of the June deadlines for many commodities planted in North Dakota.
