N.D. (NewsDakots.com)—–The Carrington Cardinal’s baseball team wrapped up it’s 2017 regular season with a pair of wins over Rugby 3-2 and 3-0. The Cardinal’s will take the top seed into the upcoming Region 3 tourney starting on Monday (May 22nd). The Rugby Panther’s will host the Region 5 tourney as the number 1 seed as well.

Kyle Leapaldt pitched 5 strong innings to pickup the victory and also scored the game winning run in the top of the fifth inning on a run scoring double from Lucas Geiszler. The Cards scored a run in the first inning on a Braxton Hewitt RBI single that scored Jayden Rosenau who led off the inning with a single. The lead was short lived as Rugby picked up 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st with back-to-back RBI singles from Isaiah Johnson and Dillon Marco scoring Landon Foster and Mayson McCabe.

Trey Rosenau blasted his first home run of the year in the 2nd inning knotting up the game at 2-2 until the fifth. Seth Nelson went 2-2 and was the only Cardinal with a multi hit game. The Cards picked up 9 hits to Rugby’s 5 hits.

Drew Page pitched a 4 hit shutout and drilled a 2 run homer in the 4th inning to give the Cards a 3-0 victory. Page did not allow any walks or hit batters and after giving up back-to-back hits to start the game the Panthers were held to just 2 more singles the rest of the way. The final hit for Rugby in the fifth inning was wiped out on a 6-4-3 double play by the Cards middle infielders Kyle Leapaldt and Payton Smith. The Cards first run was scored in the first inning on a Leapaldt double plating Jayden Rosenau.

Dillon Marco was the tough luck losing pitcher, allowing just 2 earned runs, had 4 K’s, and did not walk or hit any batters. Rugby dropped to 14-6 overall (10-0 in Region 5) and the Cards improved to 13-5 overall (7-1 in Region 3). The Cards will host the Region 3 tourney in Carrington May 22-24 and the entire tourney will be on KDAK 1600 AM and newsdakota.com with game times starting at 12:00 everyday and pregame at 11:40.
