“Bob” Steven Kelly was born October 10, 1957 to Earl and Ruby (Strand) Kelly at Mercy Hospital in Valley City, North Dakota. He attended school in Valley City, graduating from VCHS in 1976. Bob graduated from North Dakota State College of Science, Wahpeton, North Dakota in 1978 and went on to graduate from Valley City State University, Valley City, in 1980. He began working in the family business, the Ben Franklin Store, and ran it until 1998. In 1997, Bob bought what would become Kelly’s Crossing at Lake Ashtabula. He retired in 2013.
He is survived by his sisters, Barbara (Paul) Henke, Valley City and Susan (Barry) Schuchard, West Fargo; a brother, James (Donna) Kelly, Salt Lake City, Utah; his longtime partner, Mona Hennel and son Brad (Lori) Hannesson; nieces and nephews, Carmen Sorensen, Nicholas Henke, Adam Kelley, Jennifer Phillips, Brittney Hoverson, Rylee Schuchard, Katie Kelly, Matt Kelly, Amy Welsh, and Jacob Kelly; and eight great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Ruby Kelly, a brother, Michael Earl Kelly, and a great niece, Nora Kelly Henke. Bob died May 13, 2017 at Essentia Health, Fargo, North Dakota with his family by his side.
The funeral service for Bob will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 16, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Valley City. Visitation will be 5-7 pm Monday at the Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City, with a prayer service at 7 pm in the chapel. Visitation will continue one hour before the service in the church. Burial will be in Woodbine Cemetery, Valley City.
