D.C. (NewsDakota.com) – There’s a new scam preying on veterans who are making decisions about their medical care.

The Veterans Choice Program (VCP) is an initiative of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). In a report, scammers have been setting up a phony telephone line that resembles that of the VCP’s phone number.

“Con artists often use names, seals, and logos that look or sound like those of respected, legitimate organizations,” the release says. “This time they’re using a phone number that’s almost identical to the real thing, counting on creating confusing.”

Veteran Service Officer David Bratton reports that this scam has not yet been seen in the area, but  he is helping by spreading around the correct information.

If you’re a veteran or helping one with health care, be sure to contact the real VCP number at 866-606-8198. If you’re not sure you’ve reached the VCP, hang up, check the real number and try again. The VA or any government agency will never ask for your financial account information.
