Kan. (JimmieAthletics.com) – In the opening game of the Hutchinson bracket in the NAIA National Baseball Tournament Opening Round, the Jimmies were unable to overcome a four-run Concordia (Neb.) eighth inning, falling 8-7 to the Bulldogs Monday.

Concordia scored twice in the bottom of the first inning. Casey Berg singled as did Wade Council. Berg went to third on the hit, and Council advanced to second on the throw. With one out, Jason Gleano’s ground out scored Berg, then Christian Meza singled to deep right-center to score Council.

The Jimmies took the lead with three runs in the top of the third. Christian Shouman (SR/Lake Stevens, WA) single through the hole between short and third. Kory Wolden (JR/West Fargo, ND) bunted him over to second, and a passed ball moved Shouman to third. Landon Uetz (SR/West Fargo, ND) homered to deep left to tie the score. Tyler Ludlow (JR/Port Orchard, WA) followed with a walk and Alex Sablan (SR/Port Orchard, WA) moved him to third with a single to deep right-center. A Quinn Irey (JR/Bismarck, ND) shot to left scored Sablan and gave the Jimmies the 3-2 lead.

Concordia scored two in the bottom of the seventh to retake the lead, using two hits and an error. Jamestown tied it in the top of the eighth with a single run.

In the bottom of the eighth, Concordia scored four runs to break the game open. Jake Adams’ three-run homer was the big hit of the inning, making the score 8-4. 

Jamestown mounted a comeback in their last at bat. Uetz doubled with one out and scored on a Ludlow single. With two down, Peter Pennylegion (JR/Ferndale, WA) singled in a run, as did Scooter Turin (JR/Sandy, OR), and the Jimmies were within one at 8-7. Kory Wolden to flew out to right field for the final out, sending Concordia on to face Clarke University tonight at 6:00 p.m.

Jerome Byndloss (JR/Las Vegas, Nev.) started and pitched the first 6 2/3 innings. He gave up four runs and six hits, striking out eight. Lance Kotter (SR/Boise, ID) took the loss, allowing two runs on one hit in one-third of an inning.

Desmond Pineda was the winning pitcher, pitching two innings and allowing three runs on five hits. He struck out two and walked two.

Uetz and Irey both had three hits. Sablan and Shouman finished with two. 

The Jimmies will face Tabor at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday.
