CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The CROP Walk for Hunger event in Valley City is set for tonight at 7 pm at Faith Lutheran Church; registration starts at 6:30 pm.
CROP Walk event coordinator Sharon Buhr said the walk will be 5 kilometers (about 3 miles). When the walk originated in 1981, it was 20 km (12 miles), then later was reduced to 10 km (6 miles), and now is 5 km.
Buhr said, “‘We walk because they walk’ has been a theme, and people in developing countries are having to walk less of a distance now to fetch water their water, hence our walk to support them has been reduced.”
“This is an opportunity to fight hunger globally and in our local community,” notes Pastor Jolene Knudson-Hanse.
Twenty percent of the funds raised will be given to the Barnes County Food Pantry. The funds going overseas will go through Church World Service, an ecumenical development and relief organization that works across the world. They also worked in the USA and provided relief services in 1997 for the people in the Grand Forks area during the flood.
Church World Service (CWS) works with communities across the globe to overcome the root causes of hunger. One area they are working in is Uganda in Africa, addressing the food insecurity, drought and poverty that has plagued that region for years.
CWS recognizes that safe and accessible water is at the very heart of a community’s ability to thrive—water for crops, animals, people. There are almost 800 million people in the world that have little or no access to clean water and nearly 2.5 billion (1/3 or the world’s population) do not have access to adequate sanitation. CWS joins with communities to help build and maintain a variety of water systems—from sand dams to wells to reservoirs—that draw upon rainwater or underground sources.
CWS works to provide food and assistance to refugees in camps across the world, such as the one in Kenya which is a series of 5 camps that house over 250,000 refugees from countries that are in the midst of war.
Anyone interested in walking is invited to come to Faith Lutheran Church at 7 pm and walk. All are welcome including your favorite dog.
