N.D. (JimmieAthletics.com) – Tyler Ludlow (JR/Port Orchard, WA)’s eighth-inning grand slam gave Jamestown a six-run lead and the Jimmies took a 14-7 victory against Dickinson State (N.D.) in the first round of the North Star Athletic Association conference tournament. 

Alex Sablan (SR/Port Orchard, WA) hit a three-run homer as the Jimmies took a 4-0 lead against Dickinson State starter Sean Getchell. UJ scored another run in the inning on a wild pitch. 

Jamestown struck again in the top of the third, plating three runs on a Sablan single, a Quinn Irey (JR/Bismarck, ND) squeeze bunt, and a double by Peter Pennylegion (JR/Ferndale, WA).

Dickinson State got on the board in the bottom of the third as Nate Demarais scored on a fielder’s choice. The Blue Hawks added single runs in the fourth and fifth on groundouts, cutting the Jimmie lead to 7-3.

Chad Mackay and Trevor Oldham homered on consecutive pitches to open the bottom of the sixth, chasing Jamestown starter Chase Thometz (JR/Sandy, OR). Pinch-hitter TJ McCullough greeted reliever Beau Rabedeaux (JR/Poulsbo, WA) with a homer of his own on a 3-1 count, and the Blue Hawks trailed 7-6. 

UJ took advantage of two Blue Hawk errors and a passed ball to get two runs in the top of the seventh to push their lead to 9-6.

Sagan Osborne hit Dickinson State’s fourth longball of the game, connecting off Nick Torres (JR/Bremerton, WA) in the bottom of the seventh to get one of the runs back.

With one out in the top of the eighth and Christian Shouman (SR/Lake Stevens, WA) at third and Kory Wolden (JR/West Fargo, ND) at second, Landon Uetz (SR/West Fargo, ND) was intentionally walked to load the bases. Down two strikes, Ludlow left the yard to make it 13-7 Jimmies.

Shouman drove in the final Jimmie run in the top of the ninth with a double to push home Scooter Turin (JR/Sandy, OR).

Thometz was the winning pitcher, working five innings, allowing five runs on seven hits. He walked five and struck out three.

Sean Getchell took the loss for the Blue Hawks. He lasted three innings and gave up seven runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out one.

Ludlow and Shouman each had three of UJ’s 14 hits. Wolden and Nico Kelly (SR/Chicago Heights, Ill.) both had a pair of hits. Ludlow and Sablan drove in four runs.

Dylan Skabo, Jacob Cuch, and Danny Brescia all had two hits for Dickinson State.

The Blue Hawks (21-26) will play a loser-out game against Presentation College Saturday at 11 a.m. Jamestown (37-17) will play Bellevue (Neb.) at 2 p.m.
