FARGO, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- In their first ever varsity meeting, The Hi-Liners softball team lost a pair of EDC games Monday night to West Fargo Sheyenne 8-7 and 9-6. Valley City’s record drops to 3-8 and 2-7 in the conference, The Mustangs improve to 7-6 with a 7-1 mark in The EDC placing them 3rd. VCHS heads to Devils Lake Tuesday for a 2 point game with The Firebirds.
GAME 1 WF Sheyenne 8 VCHS 7
In a game that was evenly matched a defensive miscued decided the final outcome. The two teams combined for 5 runs in the 1st inning, The Hi-Liners scored 3 and The Mustangs 2. Valley City added a run in the 4th to go up 4-2 when The Mustangs broke the game open in the home half of the inning. Sheyenne scored 4 runs on 4 hits to take the lead 6-4. Valley City got a run in the 5th only to see The Mustangs get it back in the bottom of the inning.
In the top of the 6th Eliza Johnson and Kace White started a rally with back to back singles. Mackenzie Pederson brought home Johnson with a sac fly and White scored on an error to knotted it up at 7. Morgan Geiszler reached first on an error to start of the 6th. She was moved on to second base after a fly out. A misplayed ground ball brought the go ahead run home with the fielders choice. Sheyenne starter Regan Jastram set The Hi-Liners down in order to secure the win.
Jastram got the complete game win for Sheyenne with 5 strike outs. Becca Thompson took the loss for Valley City, she worked all 6 innings striking out 2.
The Hi-Liners had 11 hits. Becca Thompson, McKenna Taylor and Eliza Johnson had 2 hit games. Mackenzie Pederson was hitless but drove in 2 runs. Morgan Geiszler led Sheyenne’s offense with 2 hits and 2 RBIs.
GAME 2 WF Sheyenne 9 VCHS 6
The Mustangs scored 4 unanswered runs to come back and sweep the doubleheader. Valley City was down 5-1 and took the lead with 5 run 4th. Hailey Schafer and McKenna Taylor reached on a base hits and Courtney Lloyd get on with an error to start off the big inning. The Hi-Liners sent 10 to plate with Kacee White hitting a 2 RBI single and Jayda Haugen singling in a run. Lexi Ondracek and Eliza Johnson drew bases loaded walks. They were able to chase out starter Kiley Washnieski.
Sheyenne immediately took the lead back in the bottom of the 5th with 2 runs on 2 hits. They added 2 more insurance runs in the 6th. Valley City again fell victim to a 3 up 3 down 7th.
Jastram won for the 2nd time going 3 inning of relief without allowing a run. Grace Scherr was The Hi-Liner’s pitcher of record, she got the complete game with 5 punch outs and 5 walks. She had 7 earned runs.
Kacee White was 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs. Jayda Haugen had 2 hits and an RBI and Courtney Lloyd went 2 for 4. Morgan Geizler and Regan Jastram led The Mustangs going 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs.
