N.D. (AP) – Gov. Doug Burgum has vetoed a bill that would require landlords to install carbon monoxide detectors in rental properties.

The North Dakota Legislature passed the measure this month.

Burgum says carbon monoxide “represents a very small, yet measurable life safety risk” in residential rental property.

He says that risk should be handled by “local building codes, property owners and renters, rather than more burdensome statewide regulations. “

He says carbon monoxide monitors are low cost and widely available.
