S.D. (UJ) – The Jimmie baseball team used timely home runs Monday to complete a sweep of No. 22 Mayville State University, defeating the Comets 7-6 in 10 innings and holding on for a 3-1 win in the nightcap.

Kaleb Binstock (SO/Grand Forks, ND) homered on a 1-2 pitch with one out in the bottom of the 10th to give Jamestown an opening game win. 

The Jimmies trailed 2-0 after the Comets scored twice in the top of the second, but came through with a six-run inning capped off by Tyler Ludlow (JR/Port Orchard, WA)’s three-run home run. 

Mayville State got back in the game with three runs in the third and another to tie in the top of the fourth.  

Eric Evans (JR/Weyburn, SK, Canada) pitched three scoreless innings to get the win. Chase Thometz (JR/Sandy, OR) started and pitched the first seven innings, giving up six runs on seven hits. He struck out 11, one off of his season high.

Jamestown had 15 hits with Kory Wolden (JR/West Fargo, ND) and Ludlow each going 3-for-4. Taichi Sasaki (JR/Sakai, Osaka, Japan) was 2-for-3. 

Jonathan Folena, Brady Nygaard, Dondrei Hubbard, and Riley Nelson had two hits for the Comets. Jacob Torgerson took the loss, pitching 4 1/3 innings in relief of starter Zach Mahoney. Mahoney lasted five innings, surrendering 12 hits and six runs, just two of which were earned.

In game two, Nygaard hit a solo home run off of Logan Lund (SR/Tolna, ND) in the top of the fourth to give the Comets a 1-0 lead. 

Alex Sablan (SR/Port Orchard, WA) connected on a pinch-hit home run leading off the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 1.

UJ’s pinch-hitting power came through again in the bottom of the sixth as Mark Kane (SR/Tinley Park, IL) led off the inning with a solo shot to left, giving the Jimmies a 2-1 lead. Jamestown added another run as Taichi Sasaki scored on a passed ball.

Lund went the distance in pitching his first complete game of the season. He struck out six, allowed five hits, and walked four. Kalton Agnes took the loss, allowing three runs on two hits over two innings. 

Nico Kelly (SR/Chicago Heights, Ill.) had the other Jamestown hit. Jose Guzman was 2-for-3 for Mayville State.

Jamestown (33-16 overall, 14-6 NSAA) hosts Valley City State in a weekend series while Mayville State (36-9, 15-5) takes on North Dakota State on Tuesday.
