CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – David Schwalbe will give a presentation on radioactive waste tonight at 7 pm at the Rhoades Science Center, in room 102, on the campus of Valley City State University.
Schwalbe said North Dakota’s contribution to energy independence through Bakken oil development comes with a price to the environment and public safety unless the state has sound regulations and enforces them.
Radioactive waste is one of the hazards the state may or may not be addressing well enough. Schwalbe will share his perspective based on spending the last eight years learning about oil development and state regulation.
Schwalbe is a lifelong North Dakotan who grew up on a ranch next to the Little Missouri State Park near Killdeer. After earning a degree in animal science from North Dakota State University, he worked as a rancher.
During the last eight years, he has worked with the Dakota Resource Council, Northwest Landowners Association, Lewis & Clark Wildlife group, ND Wildlife Federation and the Badlands Conservation Alliance. He is on the board of directors for Friends of Theodore Roosevelt National Park and for Backcountry Horsemen. His primary concerns include corruption in politics and failures of state regulation on behalf of North Dakota citizens. He and his wife, Ellen Chaffee (former president of VCSU) live in Bismarck.
The event is sponsored by What In The World Is Going On? The public is invited to attend this free presentation. What In The World Is Going On? is a campus/community organization dedicated to stimulating discussion about current topics of interest in our state and nation. For more information call 845-7321.
