CITY, N.D. (VCSUVikings.com)- Jordon Roos took a no-hitter into the eighth inning Saturday as the Valley City State University baseball team pitched a pair of shutouts against Presentation College, 5-0 and 7-0.
The Vikings won the first game 5-0 behind Roos’ strong outing. The junior right-hander did not allow a hit through the first 7 2/3 innings before losing his no-hit bid on a bang-bang call at first base. In game two, Steven Velarde gave up just three hits over six innings as he pitched the Vikings to a 7-0 victory.
Four Viking pitchers combined to throw 16 shutout innings Saturday, allowing only six total hits. Presentation College advanced only one runner to third base all day, and that did not happen until the sixth inning of game two. Valley City State’s defense did not commit an error during the doubleheader.
“Our pitching today was outstanding,” said VCSU coach Casey Olney. “You can’t ask for anything better than what they did on the mound today.”
The pair of victories on VCSU’s Senior Day completes the series sweep against Presentation College after two wins on Friday. Valley City State is now 19-20 overall and improves to 13-3 in conference play. The Vikings move into third in the NSAA conference standings. Presentation College drops to 10-30 overall and 2-14 in conference play.
VCSU senior Brady Anderson set a new career hits record at VCSU on Saturday after hitting a double during his first at-bat of the game. It was Anderson’s 200th career hit, breaking the old record of 199 held by Tyler Schlecht.

The Vikings and Saints were locked in a 1-0 pitcher’s duel until VCSU broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the eighth, including a three-run double off the bat of Brady Anderson.
Jordon Roos was locked in from the start on the mound as he turned in a dominating performance. Roos did not allow a hit through the first 7 2/3 innings. The no-hit bid was broken up in the eighth inning when Lane Hovde narrowly beat out a weak ground ball to shortstop. Roos then finished the eighth with a 1-0 lead, allowing just one hit over his eight innings of work. He walked three and struck out three.
After the Vikings scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth, Max Koprek came on to pitch the ninth inning and complete the combined shutout.
Brady Anderson went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs to lead the Viking offense. In Anderson’s first at-bat of the day he drilled a two-out double to right field for his 200th career hit, making him the new career hits leader at VCSU. Anderson broke the old record of 199 set by Tyler Schlecht, who played for the Vikings from 1986-89.
Ryan Sand added two hits and an RBI. His RBI single scored Nate Bagby in the bottom of the second inning, giving the Vikings a 1-0 lead.
VCSU 7, Presentation College 0
Valley City State made it 16 scoreless innings on the day with another shutout in game two, winning 7-0 to complete the sweep.
Viking starter Steven Velarde was dominant on the mound, retiring 16 of the first 17 batters he faced. The senior right-hander allowed only three hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out eight over six shutout innings. Senior Tyler Olson pitched a perfect seventh inning to complete the combined shutout.
The Viking offense put up four runs in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run double by senior Jared Meiklejohn and a two-run home run from senior Joe Demers. The Viking tacked on single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning. The final run came via a solo home run by senior Mitch Scheer – the first home run of his collegiate career.
Meiklejohn and senior Anthony Necochea each had a pair of hits as the Vikings collected 10 hits in the game.
