CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- Grand Forks Central had 5 runners reach with 2 outs in the 7th to comeback and take game 1 13-11 against Valley City Tuesday in an EDC Softball doubleheader. The bats came alive for The Hi-Liners in game 2 with The Knights falling 13-1. Valley City moves to 2-3 in The EDC and 2-4 overall. Central falls to 1-5 with a 1-4 conference mark. Next Tuesday Valley City plays at Fargo South in a 2 point EDC game.
Game 1: GF Central 13 Valley City 11
The Knights hit well with 2 outs all game plating runs in the 3rd and 5th while facing their final out. Central came back to go up 7-5 after a 3 run 4th. VCHS responded with a 6 running half inning taking an 11-7 advantage. Hits from The Knight’s Taiylor Ellingson and Willow Rynestad cut into their deficit 11-9 in the 5th .
Neither team scored in the 6th giving Central one last chance to come back. With 2 outs and 1 on Ellingson brought home a run with a double, back to back walks keeping the inning alive. A wild pitch knotted the game at 11. Catcher Kaitlynn Hajicek put Central up 13-11 with a 2 RBI single. The first hitters were put down in order in the home half of the 7th. Mackenzie Pederson was hit by a pitch but would be stranded at first base to end the game.
Each team collected 10 hits in the contest. Neither played well in the field, Valley City committed 8 errors to Central’s 5. Becca Thompson got a no decision in the start going 5 innings with 5 strike outs, McKenna Taylor took the loss working the final 2 frames with 2 punch outs. Willow Rynestad went the distance for The Knight, she had 6 strike outs.
Pederson went 3 for 4 to led Valley City, she scored twice with 3 RBIs reaching base safely 5 times. Kacee White had 2 hits and a RBI. Grace Scherr had a pair of doubles and 2 runs. The Knight’s Ellingson was 2 for 5 with 4 RBIs.
Game 2: Valley City 13 GF Central 1 (5 innings)
A 7 hit 11 run 4th inning decided the 2nd game. Valley City sent 15 batter to the plate in the inning to 10 run The Knight. Two Hi-Liners had multi hit innings, Emily Murray had a single, triple and 2 RBIs and Maren Horner hit a single, triple and knocked in a run. MacKenzie Leroux, Kacee White, Mackenzie Pederson and Courtney Lloyd had run scoring hits.
Grace Scherr had a complete game allowing 4 hits, no walks and striking out 5 over 5 innings.
