N.D.(VCSUVikings.com) – Valley City State sophomore Jared Lentz shot an even-par 72 on Monday at Bully Pulpit Golf Course, earning the individual title at the 36-hole Dickinson State Invite.
After carding a 75 in windy conditions during Sunday’s opening round, Lentz was even better on Monday as he finished the 18 challenging holes at even par – the best round by anyone in the tournament. His 36-hole score of 147 was a dominating performance, finishing four shots better than second place and eight shots better than third place.
It is the second time Lentz has won medalist honors in his college golf career. The sophomore from Valley City also won the Minnesota-Morris Cougar Invite as a freshman last season.
Valley City State’s men’s team finished in second place overall. The Vikings entered Monday’s final round with a two-shot lead in the team race after shooting 324 on Sunday. VCSU shaved 10 shots off its score with a 314 in the second round, but it wasn’t enough to hang on to first place. University of Jamestown fired a 303 team score on Monday as the Jimmies took first with a 629 total. VCSU was second at 638 and University of Great Falls was third at 639. Dickinson State (674) and Miles City Community College (714) rounded out the competition.
VCSU junior Kyle Wiebe also had a Top 10 finish as he tied for sixth place with a 159 total (80-79). After shooting 87 on Sunday, VCSU’s Cameron Rall bounced back with a 79 on Monday as he placed 15th. Collin Hoss took 17th (84-84, 168) and Jeremie Pasitney (85-87, 172) tied for 23d to round out VCSU’s team.
VCSU’s Dalton Beighley (29th, 88-91) and Tyler Seeba (33rd, 94-88) also played the tournament as unattached golfers.
The Viking women placed fourth overall as a team with a two-day total of 883. VCSU improved its second round score by five shots compared to round one. University of Jamestown won the women’s tournament, while Great Falls placed second, Dickinson took third and VCSU finished fourth.
Nicole Heinitz and Haley Christofferson took 13th and 14th as the top Viking finishers on the women’s side. Heinitz finished with a 202 total (103-99) while Christofferson shot a 205 (103-102). Tory Anderson placed 17th (122-106) and Megan McNamee finished in 23rd (116-132).
Up next: Valley City State is scheduled to play the 36-hole Concordia Spring Invite in Moorhead, Minn., on April 14-15. The tournament will be played at both Village Green Golf Course and The Meadows Golf Course. It is VCSU’s final tune-up before the North Star Athletic Association Tournament, April 24-25 in Onalaska, Wis.
