N.D. (UJ) – The Jimmie baseball team wrapped up a sweep of its four-game conference series against the University of Winnipeg, taking Friday’s games 19-2 and 3-1, then coming back Saturday with 14-3 and 2-1 victories.

Jamestown improves to 27-11 on the season and 10-2 in North Star Athletic Association play. Winnipeg falls to 0-12 in the NSAA and 2-28 overall.

The Jimmies and Wesmen will play a single nine inning non-conference game Sunday beginning at 12:00 p.m.

Game One: Jimmies 19, Wesmen 2 (Friday)

The runs came early and often for UJ in the series opener, as the Jimmies led 13-0 after they finished batting in the third inning.

Jamestown’s four first-inning runs came with two out. Tyler Ludlow (JR/Port Orchard, WA) and Quinn Irey (JR/Bismarck, ND) had RBI singles and Peter Pennylegion (JR/Ferndale, WA) drove in two runs with a single to stake starter Jerome Byndloss (JR/Las Vegas, Nev.) with an early lead.

Landon Uetz (SR/West Fargo, ND) had a two-run single and Ludlow followed with a two-run home run to make it 8-0 Jimmies. Pennylegion drove in another run with a double to make it 9-0.

Ludlow and Irey again knocked in runs with base hits, and Pennylegion struck again with his second two-run single of the game to push the lead to 13-0.

After Winnipeg scored twice in the bottom of the fourth, Scooter Turin (JR/Sandy, OR) homered with one out, and it was 14-2 Jamestown.

UJ added two in the sixth and three in the seventh for their final runs of the game.

Byndloss improved to 10-0 on the mound, tying Craig Talbot for the second-most wins in a season. He worked six innings and gave up two runs on four hits, striking out six and walking two. Cade Campbell (SR/McNeal, AZ) pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief.

Uetz, Ludlow, Irey, and Pennylegion had three hits each. Pennylegion finished with five RBI while Irey drove in three. Mark Kane (SR/Tinley Park, IL) was 2-for-2 with a double and four runs scored.

Game Two: Jimmies 3, Wesmen 1 (Friday)

After scoring 19 runs on 18 hits in the opener, Jamestown scored just three runs on five hits, but the pitching of Brad Bennett (SR/Hillsboro, OR) and Eric Evans (JR/Weyburn, SK, Canada) allowed the Jimmies to take a 3-1 win.

Bennett (4-2) allowed one run on four hits over six innings, striking out five. Evans closed the door in the seventh to earn his fourth save.

Landon Uetz blasted a two-run home run in the top of the third to stake UJ to a 2-0 lead. The homer was his 180th career hit, breaking the previous Jimmie record of 179 held by Max Boe.

Quinn Irey scored on an error in the top of the fourth and the Jimmies led 3-0.

Garrett Jewell got the home team on the board in the bottom half, driving in Cole Armstrong with a single.

Irey had two of UJ’s five hits. Kory Wolden (JR/West Fargo, ND) and Peter Pennylegion had hits in addition to Uetz.

Game Three: Jimmies 14, Wesmen 3 (Saturday)

As was the case in Friday’s first game, Saturday’s opener saw Jamestown score runs in bunches. A three-run third and four-run fourth gave the Orange and Black a 7-0 lead.

Winnipeg countered with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Jimmies tacked on another three-spot in the fifth to lead 10-1.

Landon Uetz drove in four runs with a pair of hits while Peter Pennylegion had three RBI and two hits to lead UJ. Kory Wolden was 2-for-2 with three walks, three runs scored, and two steals from the leadoff spot.

Logan Lund (SR/Tolna, ND) (6-2) worked five innings for the victory. He struck out seven while giving up three runs on four hits. Nick Torres (JR/Bremerton, WA), Kaleb Binstock (SO/Grand Forks, ND), and Brandon Radmacher (SR/White City, SK, Canada) combined to pitch four innings of hitless relief, striking out five.

Game Four: Jimmies 2, Wesmen 1 (Saturday)

Chase Thometz (JR/Sandy, OR) turned in another stellar pitching performance in the series finale, striking out 12 over seven innings as the Jimmies took a 2-1 decision.

Peter Pennylegion’s fourth-inning home run broke a 1-all tie and proved to be the game winner.

Mark Kane singled home Kaleb Binstock in the second for the first run of the game. Winnipeg tied the game in the bottom of the third on Cole Armstrong’s single.

Thometz’s 12 strikeouts set a career-best, as he upped his won-loss record to 4-3. He has completed four straight starts, allowing three earned runs in 26 innings during that span.

Scooter Turin had two of the seven UJ hits, and five Jimmies each recorded one base knock.
