N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – State Superintendent Kirsten Baesler says she has approved new math and English standards for North Dakota’s classrooms.
Two groups of North Dakota math and English teachers wrote the standards. They replace the North Dakota math and English standards that were based on the Common Core.
Baesler says North Dakota teachers will start using the new standards this fall. They provide guideposts for what students should know and be able to do in each grade.
The teacher groups started working on the new standards last June. North Dakota’s current math and English standards are six years old.
Lynn Mitzel is a math coach for Fargo’s public schools. She was one of the teachers that helped write the new math standards. She says the process gave North Dakota teachers an opportunity to improve North Dakota’s standards.
Preliminary drafts of the standards were opened to public comment last September and January. They were also reviewed by a separate group of eight community leaders, business people and representatives of the general public.
Edgeley High School math teacher Patsy Schlosser says the process worked well.
The North Dakota University System is writing a letter of support for the standards.
The new standards will be posted on the Department of Public Instruction’s website.
