N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- Valley City was hampered by offensive struggles in an EDC doubleheader Thursday in Fargo. Bruins’ ace Andy Pugliano pitched a 1 hit shut out in the first game to led South to an 8-0 win. The Hi-Liners failed to plate the tying run in a 4-3 loss in the 2nd match up. Valley City continues conference play Tuesday against Devils Lake at Charlie Brown Field.
Game 1: South 8 VCHS 0
Andy Pugliano was perfect through 11 batters and allowed just 1 hit and 3 baserunners in a complete game shutout. The South senior registered 11 strikeouts. Nate Rodriguez broke up the perfect game bid with a 2 out single in the 4th.
The Bruins scored 3 runs in the 1st, 2 in the 4th and 3 in the 6th. Jacob Honl had a 2 RBI double in the 1st inning. Nate Rodrguez took the loss in the start lasting 3 innings, Rylee Bjork finished the final 3 frames.
Game 2: South 4 VCHS 3
Valley City stranded 11 runners in a close non conference game. Down 4-0 The Hi-Liner produced all their runs in the 5th with bases loaded walks to Reese Huschka and Cole McGough. Luther Zeltinger brought home Stephan Brooks with a ground out.
David Fletcher was 1-3 with a double and run scored. Nate Rodriguez, Matt Brandvold and Seth Hanson also produced hits. Cole McGough drew 4 walks in 4 plate appearances. Jacob Honl went 2 for 3 to led South.
Brooks was the pitcher of record throwing 4 innings with a strike out and 4 runs. Sam Jenson logged 2 innings of relief with a strike out.
