funeral service for Dorie M. Burdick, 91, Valley City, ND will be at 11:00 AM on March 29, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley City. Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 28, 2017, from 5 to 7pm at Lerud-Schuldt-Mathias Funeral Home, Valley City. Burial will be at Memory Gardens near Valley City, later this spring. She died at her home on Thursday, March 23, 2017, surrounded in love by her family and with the support of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Doris “Dorie” Mae Wical was born August 24, 1925 in Page, ND to Leslie and Mabel (Gorseth) Wical. She grew up and attended school in the Page and Tower City, ND area. After graduating from high school, she worked in Fargo and at a café in Tower City.
On July 7, 1945, Dorie married Gene Burdick in Alexander, LA, where he was stationed with the U.S. Army. When he was discharged, they moved back to ND where they farmed and raised their four children. In 1972, Dorie began working for National Farmers Organization. In 1977, she started with Federal Crop Insurance, and that fall, she worked in the ASCS office. They moved to Valley City in 1984 and Dorie retired in 1985.
Following her retirement, she spent many years volunteering at the Sheyenne Care Center, Faith In Action, Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, and Trinity Lutheran Church. She also delivered Meals on Wheels and volunteered with area respite programs. Gene died on March 24, 2004. She continued to make her home in Valley City.
Dorie surrounded herself with her family and numerous friends. She loved attending local dances. She met a special friend, Roland Mohn, and they enjoyed ten years together dancing, camping, and traveling. She enjoyed attending her great-grandchildren’s events, cooking family meals, and loved her family fiercely. Roland died on October 9, 2016.
Dorie is survived by her daughter, Peggy (Randy) Koch, Luverne, ND; a daughter-in-law, Doreen Burdick, Bismarck, ND; grandchildren, Naomi (Jesse Kubesh) Koch, Jamestown, ND, Natalie (Ian Severson) Koch, Valley City, ND, and Joseph (Rachael) Koch, Luverne, ND; great-grandchildren, Zoey, Trenton, Jessa Jo, Jonah, and Isabella Koch, and Tarissa Severson; sister, Joyce Gray, Lake Mills, WI; and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews, and a great-great-great-nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gene Burdick; sons, Gerry, Wayne, and Kevin Burdick; brothers, Lyle Wical, Duane Wical, and Loren Wical; sisters, Carol Miller and Joanne Wical; and best friend, Roland Mohn.
